Great Britain get their Hockey World League campaign off to a winning start

Great Britain got their Hockey World League campaign off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Spain in Valencia.

Two goals in a minute inside the final quarter proved enough for Danny Kerry's side, with Reading's Alex Danson opening the scoring from the penalty spot before Clifton's Joie Leigh doubled the lead.

The turning point came with four minutes gone in the final quarter as Britain were awarded a penalty stroke for a foul on Danson.

The No 15 took the chance herself and beat goalkeeper Maria Lopez to open the scoring.

And they doubled the lead moments later as Danson crossed from the left for Leigh to guide home her first international goal with a deft finish.

The visitors finished the game with 10 players after Susannah Townsend was sin-binned but Kerry’s team saw the game out to take the three points.

Kerry said: "Alex showed world class composure after a long wait for the stroke, then brilliant skill to centre the ball for Joie's first international goal.

"On a personal note I am delighted for Emily Maguire, who made her 150th international cap - that is some achievement."

Britain's next match is against Argentina on Saturday.
